Bovine Bone Matrix Action Associated With Morphogenetic Protein in Bone Defects in Rats Submitted to Alcoholism International Journal of Morphology
Buchaim,Rogério Leone; Andreo,Jesus Carlos; Rodrigues,Antonio de Castro; Buchaim,Daniela Vieira; Roque,Domingos Donizeti; Roque,José Sidney; Rosa Júnior,Geraldo Marco.
Extended excessive alcohol use causes changes in bone tissue, thus affecting osteogenesis. The objective of this study was to evaluate if demineralized bone matrix (Gen-ox®) associated with bone morphogenetic protein (Gen-pro®) changes bone neoformation in rats submitted to experimental alcoholism. Forty male rats (Rattus norvegicus) were separated into 2 groups of 20 animals each: Group E1, which received ethyl alcohol at 25% and had the surgical cavity filled in only with blood clot; and Group E2, which received ethyl alcohol at 25% and had the surgical cavity filled in with demineralized bovine cortical bone associated with bone morphogenetic protein. The animals were submitted to a three-week period of gradual adaptation to alcohol, and then continued...

Daily life of women with alcoholic companions and the provided care Anais da ABC (AABC)
NASCIMENTO,VAGNER F. DO; LIMA,CLÁUDIA A.S.; HATTORI,THALISE Y.; TERÇAS,ANA CLÁUDIA P.; LEMES,ALISSÉIA G.; LUIS,MARGARITA A.V..
Abstract: The study aimed to know the daily life of women with alcoholic companions and the provided care. This is a comprehensive-interpretative, qualitative study, guided by the thematic Oral History method. Data collection occurred by semistructured interview. The empirical material was subjected to content analysis under the light of the King’s Theory of Goal Attainment. Women are frustrated and frightened by the alcoholic companion’s behavior and lifestyle, and still feel judged by society. Many abandon their life projects and self-care due to the overload caused by the companion’s absence in the care of home and children. The family care they develop focuses on maintaining the family and protecting from further damage. The study revealed that these...

DENSITY AND MORPHOMETRY OF MYENTERIC NEURONS OF THE ILEUM OF RATS SUBJECTED TO CHRONIC ALCOHOLISM International Journal of Morphology
dos Santos Pereira,Marli Aparecida; Molinari,Sonia Lucy; de Sousa,Fernando Carlos; André,Oriana Elaine; de Miranda Neto,Marcílio Hubner.
This work verified the changes caused by ethanol ingestion on the myenteric neurons of the ileum of rats subjected to chronic alcoholism. Twenty rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided in control (GC) and alcoholic (GA) groups during 210 days. The animals from group GA received sugar-cane brandy diluted to 30 GL and those from group GC received water. Both groups were fed with rodent chow ad libitum. The ileum was prepared as whole-mounts for neuronal staining according to Barbosa (1978) and Gabella (1979). The neurons were counted and the cell bodies were measured. The statistical analysis revealed a significant decrease in the number of large neurons in GA compared with GC, while there was a significant increase in the number of small neurons in GA. There...

Expression profile of endothelin receptors (ETA and ETB) and microRNAs-155 and -199 in the corpus cavernosum of rats submitted to chronic alcoholism and diabetes mellitus BJMBR
Gonçalves,F.Z.; Lizarte Neto,F.S.; Novais,P.C.; Gattas,D.; Lourenço,L.G.; de Carvalho,C.A.M.; Tirapelli,D.P.C.; Molina,C.A.F.; Tirapelli,L.F.; Tucci Jr,S..
Recent evidence shows that chronic ethanol consumption increases endothelin (ET)-1 induced sustained contraction of trabecular smooth muscle cells of the corpora cavernosa in corpus cavernosum of rats by a mechanism that involves increased expression of ETA and ETB receptors. Our goal was to evaluate the effects of alcohol and diabetes and their relationship to miRNA-155, miRNA-199 and endothelin receptors in the corpus cavernosum and blood of rats submitted to the experimental model of diabetes mellitus and chronic alcoholism. Forty-eight male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control (C), alcoholic (A), diabetic (D), and alcoholic-diabetic (AD). Samples of the corpus cavernosum were prepared to study the protein expression of endothelin...

Morphological and Quantitative Analyses of the NADH-d Myenteric Neurons of the Jejunum of Rats Submitted to Experimental Chronic Alcoholism International Journal of Morphology
Pereira,Marli Aparecida dos Santos; Arantes,Márcia Alessandra; Molinari,Sonia Lucy; Zanoni,Jacqueline Nelisis; Miranda-Neto,Marcílio Hubner de.
The objective of our work was to verify, during an experimental period of 210 days, the possible effects of the ethanol on the morphology and density of the NADH-diaforase myenteric neurons in the jejunum of alcoholic rats. We used 10 animals (Rattus norvegicus) separated in 2 groups: the controls (n=5), that received a normal proteic diet (22%) and water ad libitum; the alcoholic, that received NUVILAB normal proteic chow (22%) and sugar cane brandy diluted at 30 Gay Lussac (30 v/v). The jejunum segment was collected and submitted to the histochemical technique to stain the nervous cells and, then, to the elaboration of membrane whole mounts. The observation through light microscopy showed that there are no expressive morphologic differences between the...

Morphometry and Quantification of the Myenteric Neurons of the Cecum of Rats (Rattus norvegicus) Submitted to Experimental Chronic Alcoholism International Journal of Morphology
Pereira,Marli Aparecida dos Santos; Miranda Neto,Marcílio Hubner; Arantes,Márcia Alessandra; Molinari,Sonia Lucy; Pereira,Priscila; Zanoni,Jacqueline Nelisis.
Morphometric and quantitative analyses were accomplished to study the effects of the consumption of alcohol above the size and density of the myenteric neurons of cecum of rats. Ten rats with 90 days were divided in the groups: control (C), and alcoholic (A). After 120 days of treatment with ethanol the cecum of both groups were collected, submitted it prepared of membranes that after carried out to Giemsa´s technique, permitted to evaluate the neuronal density, in an area of 13.44mm², and measure the cell body area of 300 neurons by group. The alcoholic rats presented an increase in the number of small neurons and a reduction of the big and medium neurons. The neuronal density verified in alcoholic rats was significantly reduced regarding the controls...

Noninvasive classification of liver disease in asymptomatic and oligosymptomatic male alcoholics BJMBR
Borini,P.; Guimarães,R.C..
The predominant type of liver alteration in asymptomatic or oligosymptomatic chronic male alcoholics (N = 169) admitted to a psychiatric hospital for detoxification was classified by two independent methods: liver palpation and multiple quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), the latter applied to two parameters reported by the patient (duration of alcoholism and daily amount ingested) and to the data obtained from eight biochemical blood determinations (total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, glycemia, potassium, aspartate aminotransferase, albumin, globulin, and sodium). All 11 soft and sensitive, and 13 firm and sensitive livers formed fully concordant groups as determined by QDA. Among the 22 soft and not sensitive livers, 95% were concordant by QDA...

Personality traits and psychiatric comorbidities in alcohol dependence BJMBR
Donadon,M.F.; Osório,F.L..
Non-adaptive personality traits may constitute risk factors for development of psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. We aim to evaluate associations and the predictive value of personality traits among alcohol-dependent individuals, with or without psychiatric comorbidities. The convenience sample comprised two groups of males over 18 years of age: one with subjects who had an alcohol dependence diagnosis (AG, n=110), and a control group without abuse and/or alcohol dependence diagnosis (CG, n=110). The groups were assessed by means of the Structured Clinical Interview DSM-IV (SCID-IV). AG participants were recruited among outpatients from the university hospital, whereas CG participants were recruited from a primary healthcare program....

The action of demineralized bovine bone matrix on bone neoformation in rats submitted to experimental alcoholism Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Buchaim,R.L.; Andreo,J.C.; Rodrigues,A. C.; Buchaim,D.V.; Dias,D.V.; Daré,L.R.; Roque,D.D.; Roque,J.S..
The objective of this study was to evaluate whether demineralized bovine bone (Gen-ox®) alters bone neoformation in rats submitted to alcoholism. Forty male rats were separated into two groups of 20 rats and distributed as follows: Group E1, which received 25% ethanol and a surgical cavity filled only by a blood clot, and Group E2, which received 25% ethanol and a surgical cavity filled with Gen-ox®. The animals were euthanized at 10, 20, 40 and 60 days after surgery and necropsy was performed. The histomorphological and histometric analyses of the area of connective tissue and bone neoformation showed that the reorganization of the bone marrow and full repair of the surgical cavity in Group E1 occurred more quickly than in Group E2. It was also noted that...

The decrease in uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase activity induced by ethanol predisposes rats to the development of porphyria and accelerates xenobiotic-triggered porphyria, regardless of hepatic damage BJMBR
Ríos de Molina,M.C.; Mazzetti,M.B.; Galigniana,M.; Aldonatti,C.; Tomio,J.M.; San Martín de Viale,L.C..
We evaluated the porphyrinogenic ability of ethanol (20% in drinking water) per se, its effect on the development of sporadic porphyria cutanea tarda induced by hexachlorobenzene in female Wistar rats (170-190 g, N = 8/group), and the relationship with hepatic damage. Twenty-five percent of the animals receiving ethanol increased up to 14-, 25-, and 4.5-fold the urinary excretion of delta-aminolevulinate, porphobilinogen, and porphyrins, respectively. Ethanol exacerbated the precursor excretions elicited by hexachlorobenzene. Hepatic porphyrin levels increased by hexachlorobenzene treatment, while this parameter only increased (up to 90-fold) in some of the animals that received ethanol alone. Ethanol reduced the activities of uroporphyrinogen...
